Most panels last about 25–40 years, though humidity, heavy loads, and outdated designs can shorten that lifespan. If your panel is original to a house built before the 1990s, it’s worth having a licensed electrician inspect it. Rust, scorch marks, or breakers that won’t stay reset all point to a panel nearing the end of the road.
A licensed electrician can usually swap a panel in about a day, and you’ll be without power for several hours while they work. The power company has to disconnect and reconnect service, and Caswell County needs to inspect the job, so scheduling can add a few days on either end. Moving up to 200 amps may take a little longer if the meter base or service line also needs to be replaced.
For most homes today, 200 amps is the safer bet. A 100-amp panel can work for a smaller house with gas appliances, but heat pumps, electric water heaters, workshops, and EV chargers eat up capacity fast. Going to 200 amps also leaves room for a generator, a hot tub, or an addition down the road.
It starts with a permit from your county, which is Caswell County for Pelham homes, and a quick review of how much power your home uses. On upgrade day, the power company cuts service, and your electrician swaps the panel and breakers, updates the grounding, and labels each circuit before an inspector signs off. Once the job passes, the utility restores power, and you’re good to go.
Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) panels with Stab-Lok breakers and Zinsco panels top the list, since their breakers have a history of failing to trip during overloads. Old fuse boxes and split-bus panels, older designs without a single main shutoff breaker, are worth replacing in most homes, too. If you’re not sure what you’ve got, take a photo of the panel label and have a licensed electrician take a look.
